Escalante captures boxing title

Bruno Escalante Jr. of Waimanalo won the 112-pound weight class of the National PAL Amateur Boxing Tournament yesterday in Oxnard, Calif.
Escalante, a former resident-athlete at the U.S. Olympic Training Center, defeated Michael Ruiz of Los Angeles in the final by 4-1 decision.
The 19-year-old Escalante, who trains with the East O'ahu Waimanalo Boxing Club, opened the tournament with a first-round TKO of Tyrell Denis of St. Louis, Mo., on Thursday. On Friday, Escalante beat Denis' brother, Barry, by 5-0 decision.
According to Escalante's coach, Blane Yoshida, the last Hawai'i fighter to win at this event was Brian Viloria, who was in attendance Friday night.
Arnold Dinong of Waipahu won the 138-pound class in the Junior Olympic division.

CANEFIRES, HONU WIN
Caleb Gindl's three-run homer sparked a six-run first inning that propelled West Oahu past Honolulu, 8-1, last night in Hawaii Winter Baseball at Les Murakami Stadium.
Greg Burns and Cyle Hankerd each had two hits and two RBIs for the CaneFires (5-2).
Pitchers for the Sharks (4-2) issued nine walks.
Also last night, the North Shore Honu scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to beat the Waikiki BeachBoys, 7-6, at Hans L'Orange Park
Jason Castro had four hits and Chris Carter hit a two-run homer for North Shore (2-4). Buster Posey had three hits and two RBIs for Waikiki (2-5).

SEASIDERS SWEEP
Britt Edman scored in the 17th minute as the Brigham Young-Hawai'i women's soccer team defeated Chaminade, 1-0, yesterday in a Pacific West Conference match at the Saint Louis Field.
BYUH (7-3, 3-1) outshot CU (1-6, 0-4) 13-8.
Also, Adam Maciejewski scored in the 82nd minute as the BYUH men's team rallied for a 2-1 victory over Chaminade.
Brian Noguera also scored for BYUH (3-7-1, 1-2-1). Keenan Ho scored for CU (1-10-1, 0-4).

HPU TRIUMPHS
Kelly Balanay had 19 kills, Antje Buskies added 13 kills, and Julia Gruszecka 11 kills and 11 digs as Hawai'i Pacific (5-10 overall, 2-3 PacWest) defeated host Notre Dame de Namur, 22-25, 23-25, 25-18, 25-21, 15-9, last night in a Pacific West Conference women's match at Belmont, Calif.
