Finally, a chance to do away with your old magazines, printer cartridges, plastic hangers, bicycles, telephone books and personal computers, all in one swoop. Recycling those unwanted items has never been easier when Kaimuki High holds its fifth annual community cleanup event.

Some items are limited — just four tires per household, for example — and others verboten, such as no paint, hazardous fluids, microwave ovens, TVs or gas tanks. And pickup of plastic bags will only be in the morning hours.

But here's a chance to recycle just about anything. The cleanup runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday; Kaimuki High School parking lot; Rene Mansho, 306-1876 or www.hawaiimetalrecycling.com/Kaimuki1011.htm.

REDUCING ENERGY USE OUTSIDE THE HOUSE

More Consumer Reports tips — these for outside the house — for saving energy and money:

  • Keep car tires properly inflated. In Consumer Reports' test of a Toyota Camry, fuel efficiency dropped 1.3 mpg when the tires were deflated by 10 psi.

  • String LED lights this holiday season. They last longer and Consumer Reports' tests have shown that they can save up to $11 per season.

  • Control outdoor lights with sensors or timers so that fixtures stay off during the day.

  • Plant a shade tree on the west and southwest sides of a house to save energy.
