Surf: Small for now, bigger stuff on the way

Advertiser Staff

The surf around O'ahu will be relatively small today, but the first big north swell of the season should arrive Sunday, the National Weather Service said.

Today, look for surf of 2 to 4 feet along north-facing shores; 1 to 3 feet along west-facing shores; 3 to 5 feet along east-facing shores and 2 to 4 feet along south-facing shores.

Outlook through Tuesday, Oct. 14: A series of relatively small swells will roll up on all O'ahu shores through Saturday.

North-facing shores will see generally small surf through Saturday. A developing low pressure area in the vicinity of the Aleutian Islands will generate a northwest swell expected to reach the islands Sunday morning. Surf heights will likely exceed the advisory threshold of 15 feet along north-facing beaches Sunday into early next week.

South-facing shores see generally small southwest swells through the period. Surf heights will hover around the 1- to 3-foot range with occasional inconsistent larger sets to 4 feet for standout locations around the smaller local channel entrances through at least Thursday.

East-facing shores will continue with small to moderate amounts of east-northeast short period trade swell through the remainder of the work week. Surf heights along east facing shores will increase over the weekend through Monday morning, then gradually diminish.

West-facing shores will remain small until the aforementioned northwest swell shows over the weekend. Surf along west-facing shores could potentially approach advisory levels later in the day Sunday.
