Census Bureau to begin recruiting Hawaii workers

The Los Angeles Regional Census Center will focus on a massive job-recruiting effort on the islands of Kaua'i, Maui and O'ahu. according to a new release from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Recruiting and testing sessions also will be held on both sides of the Big Island — in Hilo and Kailua, Kona.

"There are so many job opportunities now and more coming up," said Vincent Simpson, area manager, responsible for recruiting non-supervisory staff for local census office in Hawai'i.

"It's a huge effort and great opportunity economically for the community. These short-term positions will have long-term results for everyone in Hawai'i," Simpson said.

Tentative hiring for the Honolulu census office will take place from November to February and again in between March to April. Testing will take place through October.

Job Titles include: administrative assistant (AA), recruiting assistant (RA), office clerk, crewleader (CL), crew leader assistant (CLA), and enumerator/lister. These positions have a salary range of $15.50 to $17.00 per hour. The successful applicant will be 18 years of age or older, a U.S. Citizen, and able to pass an examination. It is necessary to call and reserve a seat for the examination. To reserve a seat, please call 1-886-861-2010.

Tests will be given at the following dates, times and locations:

• Oct. 9, 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. at Oahu Work Links 830 Punchbowl St., Room 111, Honolulu.

• Oct. 10, 10 a.m., noon and 2 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Lihue Stake Center, 4580 Ehiku St., Lihue.

• Oct. 14, 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. at the Hawaii Workforce Development Center, 55 Makaena Place, room 4, Kaunakakai, Molokai.

• Oct. 15, 10 a.m., noon, and 2 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 75-230 Kalani Avenue, Kailua, Kona.

• Oct. 16, 10 a.m., noon, and 2 p.m. at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1373 Kilauea Ave., Hilo.

The local census office in Honolulu will open during the first quarter of 2009 to direct field operations for the decennial (once-a-decade) population count on Census Day, April 1, 2010. For more information on Census 2010 jobs, go to www.census.gov/2010censusjobs
