Honolulu, Waikiki prevail in winter ball

Scott Shaw pitched perfect ball for five innings, teaming with four relievers on a two-hitter as the league-leading Honolulu Sharks beat the North Shore Honu, 5-0, last night in Hawaii Winter Baseball at Hans L'Orange Park.

Shaw struck out seven, then turned it over to the four relief pitchers, who each logged an inning to help the Sharks improve to 9-3-1.

Ruben Tejada, Michael Taylor and Shintaro Masuda each had an RBI for Honolulu.

Corey Brown and Kyu Hyun Moon had North Shore's (4-8-1) hits.

Elsewhere, Todd Frazier, Damon Sublett and Yonder Alonso homered as the Waikiki BeachBoys beat the West Oahu CaneFires, 13-3, at Les Murakami Stadium.

Frazier had two hits, including a two-run shot, and four RBIs for the BeachBoys (6-7). Sublett had three hits and three RBIs, including a solo shot. Alonso hit a two-run homer in the third.

Mark Hallberg had two hits and an RBI for the CaneFires (6-7).


VOLLEYBALL

UH MEN FINISH 1-3

University of Pacific defeated the University of Hawai'i men's team, 25-19, 14-25, 25-19, 22-25, 17-15, yesterday in the bronze-medal match of the Thunderball Tournament at Vancouver, B.C.

Joshua Walker hammered 34 kills and Steven Hunt added 17 for the Warriors, who finished the exhibition tournament with a 1-3 record.

On Friday, SKK of Korea beat UH, 25-19, 20-25, 25-21, 25-19, and host British Columbia beat UH, 21-25, 23-25, 25-16, 25-21, 15-12. Walker had 23 kills against Korea and 31 kills against British Columbia.

UH then beat UOP, 25-15, 25-17, 13-25, 23-25, 15-13, yesterday morning behind Rory Brandt's 16 kills. Michael China added 11 kills and Jim Clar 10.

UH-HILO WOMEN LOSE

Jenna Skadeland had a season-high nine blocks as host Grand Canyon defeated Hawai'i-Hilo, 25-20, 24-26, 25-21, 25-20, last night in a Pacific West Conference volleyball match at Phoenix, Ariz.

The Antelopes (11-9, 4-2) tied a season high with 25 blocks to rebound from a 3-1 loss to the Vulcans (15-7, 5-4) Friday night.

Dana Edington added 13 kills and five blocks for Grand Canyon.

Mary Claire Bolo had 12 kills, Fabiane Seben 11 and Morgan Bonney 10 for Hilo.


GOLF

KUA LEADS BY 5 SHOTS

TJ Kua, a freshman at the University of Hawai'i, shot a bogey-free, 5-under 67 yesterday to take a five-stroke lead in the Turtle Bay Amateur at the resort's Palmer Course.

Kua hit all 18 greens in regulation, making two birdies on the front nine and three on the back.

Rudy Cabalar Jr. is alone in second after a 72.

HILO STAYS UNBEATEN

Megan Pachecano scored two goals in the opening 6 1/2 minutes as Hawai'i-Hilo defeated Brigham Young-Hawai'i, 4-1, yesterday in a Pacific West Conference women's match at La'ie.

Melissa Grant and Paige Winchester also scored for the Vulcans (8-3, 3-0). Margaret Sekona scored for the Seasiders (8-4, 4-2).

Also yesterday, the UHH and BYUH men's teams played to a 2-2 draw.

Marcos Medina and Carlos Lopez scored for the Vulcans (6-2-1, 1-1-1). Adam Maciejewski scored both goals for the Seasiders (3-8-2, 1-3-2).
