Motorcyclist killed Sunday in Kohala crash

A 62-year-old North Kohala man died Sunday from injuries he sustained in a motorcycle crash on Kohala Mountain Road, police said today.
The name of the victim was being withheld pending notification of family members.
Emergency personnel responded to the crash at about 2:49 p.m. Sunday on Route 250 in the area of the 9-mile marker.
The victim was driving a 1979 Honda 500 custom motorcycle and traveling north on Kohala Mountain Road when he came to a curve in the road, crossed the center line and collided with a 1994 Chevrolet pickup truck traveling south, police reported.
The driver of the pickup truck, a 55-year-old Kapa'au man, was not injured.
The victim was transported to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:25 p.m. He was not wearing a helmet.

It was the 20th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year compared with 31 at this time last year.
