10 rescues amid high surf keep lifeguards tied up
High surf kept lifeguards busy on the North Shore yesterday with 10 rescues and 600 "preventive actions," where lifeguards warned people not to go into the water.
Emergency Services Department Bryan Cheplic said that waves crested at about 3:30 p.m. with wave faces of 6 to 10 feet.
Surf was expected to peak last night or early today with wave faces of 15 feet, Cheplic said.
He said water safety personnel expect a busy day today with the Discovers Day holiday. He cautioned beachgoers to check with lifeguards before going into the water.
