OIA Red playoffs set to kick off

Now that everything is settled, the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red football tournament is ready to begin.
Kahuku (6-0) claimed the East title outright with a 35-20 win against Castle Friday night, while Leilehua (5-1) took the West with a 27-21 win against Waipahu. The Mules, who were the fifth seed in the tournament last year, had help Friday night when Mililani beat Wai'anae.
The West tie-breakers went to the second option of higher-seeded common opponents, according to league coordinator Harold Tanaka. Wai'anae, Kapolei and Mililani all beat one, but not the other, so the head-to-head option still had the teams even. But Wai'anae's win against Leilehua set the Seariders apart from the Hurricanes and Trojans, who both lost to Leilehua. So Wai'anae is seeded second.
That left Kapolei and Mililani. Since Kapolei beat Mililani, the Hurricanes won the head-to-head tie-breaker for the third seed. Waipahu is the fifth seed.
After one tie-breaking procedure sets apart one team, the process reverts back to head-to-head with the remaining tied teams.
In the East, Castle and Kaimuki were tied at 3-3, but the Knights beat the Bulldogs to win the head-to-head tie-breaker for the third seed. Farrington is the second seed.
The top three seeds from each division draw byes this week.
In the first round, West fifth seed Waipahu will play East fourth seed Kaimuki Friday at Kaiser, which is the Bulldogs' designated home site. East fifth seed Kailua visits West fourth seed Mililani on Saturday. OC 16 will be televising both OIA tournament games, as well as an Interscholastic League of Honolulu game between 'Iolani at Punahou, 3:15 p.m. Friday.
The winner of Kaimuki-Waipahu will play West top seed Leilehua, while the winner of Kailua-Mililani plays East top seed Kahuku the following weekend. In the other quarterfinals, Castle plays Wai'anae and Kapolei plays Farrington. Exact dates will be announced later.
In the White, Radford, Campbell and Kalaheo have secured the top three of four tournament berths. The winner of Friday's Moanalua (5-2) at 'Aiea (4-3) game will get the fourth seed.
Radford is in the driver's seat for the top seed if it beats Waialua. The Rams beat the Sabers and would have the head-to-head tie-breaker should they finish with 7-1 records.
If Radford and Campbell (which plays at Kaiser Saturday) lose, they would be 6-2 and tied with Kalaheo, which draws a bye this weekend. Each beat one, but not the other, leading to a coin toss to determine seeding.
