The "Freedom First" exhibit opening Oct. 24 at The Arts at Marks is just a prelude to the Girl Fest 5th Anniversary events scheduled next month.

The exhibit includes 19 established and emerging local artists whose works will address restraints put on freedom — social conventions, personal abuses, underground crime, gender roles, physical disabilities — and how they have overcome these obstacles, survived or are still struggling for freedom and liberty.

The free gallery reception will be held 6-9 p.m. Oct. 24 at The ARTS at Marks, then the party moves to the Mercury Bar from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. A $5 donation is requested for the after-party, which will feature DJ Frequency and DJ Kuulei.

LAZY, AND HUNGRIER THAN EVER

Who gets hungrier, couch potatoes or active folks? A recent study compared hunger among volunteers after spending 12 hours being physically active — walking, sorting papers, picking up books and folding laundry, with no sitting for more than 10 minutes each hour — and after spending a day watching videos, working on computers and moving only by being pushed in a wheelchair. Guess what? Volunteers reported feeling hungrier, having a greater desire to eat and feeling like they could eat more after a meal after lazing around than after active sessions.

FINAL WORD

"I actually have a therapist. … It's grounding to have a sounding board to discuss the issues in my life that I don't expect my husband or friends to be interested in."
