SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Notre Dame tight end Will Yeatman has been suspended from the team for the rest of the season but remains enrolled at school after being arrested on a charge of underage drinking at an off-campus party.

Yeatman, 20, was informed of the suspension Tuesday by the university's Office of Residence Life, a week after his disciplinary hearing at the school, his mother, Bonnie, said Wednesday. The two-sport athlete plans to play lacrosse for the Irish in the spring and take part in spring football practice, she said.

The suspension was first reported by the South Bend Tribune.

Yeatman and Notre Dame center Mike Golic Jr., whose father, Mike Golic, is co-host of "Mike & Mike in the Morning" on ESPN, and women's basketball player Brittany Mallory were among 37 people arrested at a house in South Bend during the early morning hours of Sept. 21, hours after the Irish football team lost at Michigan State. Yeatman broke his nose and injured his shoulder in that game, his mother said.

Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis said previously Golic's team punishment was handled internally. Women's basketball coach Muffet McGraw said Mallory won't be allowed to play in Notre Dame's season-opener against LSU on Nov. 16.

Those arrested were sent letters from the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office offering to allow them to take part in a diversion program.

Yeatman faced a stiffer punishment. He was suspended from lacrosse and spring football after pleading guilty in February to drunken driving and reckless driving.

That plea in February was part of an agreement that required him to stay out of trouble for a year. Because of his Sept. 21 arrest, Yeatman faces up to 60 days in jail for violating that agreement. No sentencing date has been set.

Yeatman, who had two catches in three games, had been practicing with the team but not suiting up for games since his arrest. Yeatman's mother said the university suspended him from the football team because he had a blood-alcohol content of .02 percent. She said her son knows he made a mistake.

"Will broke the law, the school is punishing him and we are sad," she said.
