Maui's Dusty Payne received $20,000 for winning the inaugural Oakley Pro Junior Challenge this week at Bali, Indonesia.
The first-place check is a record amount for a junior pro contest, which is for surfers age 20 and younger.
"I'm so happy," said Payne, 19. "I haven't won an event in so many years, it's like the best feeling in the world."
Waves were barreling in the 6- to 8-foot range on the final day of competition, and Payne was in near-perfect form.
France's Marc Lacomare had the lead for most of the 45-minute final heat, but Payne received scores of 8.5 and 7.77 in the final five minutes to take the victory.
"I was behind for nearly the whole final because Marc got a good wave at the start of the heat," Payne said. "I just kept busy and luckily I was able to snag a few bombs that allowed me to execute a mixture of moves."
