BOISE, Idaho — Running back Daniel Libre scored the first touchdown of his University of Hawai'i football career last night — for somebody else.
Libre, a senior from Holualoa on the Big Island, ran 3 yards for a second-quarter touchdown — UH's only score — in a 27-7 loss to 15th-ranked Boise State.
But Libre said he dedicated the touchdown to starting running back Kealoha Pilares, whose place he took in the second quarter because of an injury. Pilares left the game after the first quarter with what was described as a foot injury.
The injury will be evaluated today upon the Warriors' return to Honolulu, officials said. But it was not initially believed to be serious.
"They (the offensive linemen) made my job easy," Libre said of his touchdown. "They just blew it (the defensive line) up. There was a hole you could drive a truck through. I could have walked in."
The touchdown came on Libre's second carry of the game and 62nd of his two-year UH career. He had seven carries for a team-high 27 yards.
Despite the personal milestone for Libre, who came to UH as a walk-on, "I dedicated it to him (Pilares) because it should have been his (carry)," Libre said. "I told him it was for him."
Libre said, "It sounds like a foot sprain and I know how that is." Libre suffered a sprain in the season opener at Florida and did not carry the ball the following game against Weber State.
"He (Libre) stepped up," quarterback Inoke Funaki said. "When somebody goes out, somebody has to step in."
Libre said, "I liked getting the (seven carries), but I'd like to get them on my own, not because he is hurt."
