Firefighters and two employees of Young Bros. Ltd. were able to contain a fire today to the day-room area of a tug boat berthed at Honolulu Harbor's Pier 22.
One of the male employees suffering from smoke inhalation was taken in serious but stable condition to a hospital, said Emergency Services Department spokesman Bryan Cheplic. No other injuries were reported from the 3:41 p.m. fire aboard the 3,300-horsepower Hawaiian Tug & Barge tractor tug Mamo.
The fire was declared under control at 3:53 p.m. and extinguished at 4:10 p.m., Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Terry Seelig said. Investigators are at the scene to try and determine cause and damage estimates.
Seelig said firefighters responded to a sighting of smoke aboard the tug and arrived to find the two employees attempting to control the fire in the day room below the wheelhouse.
