A 22-year-old man who died after being injured in an early-morning moped crash today at the intersection of Dole and Frank streets near the University of Hawai'i at Manoa campus was O'ahu's fifth traffic fatality of the month and 37th of the year.
The Honolulu Medical Examiner's office identified the moped operator as Rendell Okimoto-Allen.
Okimoto-Allen crashed his 1995 Honda Elite at 3:29 a.m. He was pronounced dead at The Queen's Medical Center at 5:29 a.m.
Vehicular homicide supervising Sgt. Andrew Berky said speed may have been a factor in O'ahu's third moped fatality of the year and second this month. DeWayne McKinney was killed in an early-morning moped crash Oct. 7 at Wai'alae and 14th avenues.
October has been a deadly month statewide. In addition to the five deaths on O'ahu, three people were killed in traffic accidents on the Big Island between Oct. 11 to 14, while an Army man on leave was killed in a rear-end collision on Maui on Oct. 6.
