Fukuroku selected WAC soccer Player of the Week

University of Hawai'i senior forward Taryn Fukuroku was named the Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Rainbow Wahine to their first conference win Sunday night.

Fukuroku scored the game-winning goal in overtime and had an assist in regulation in a 2-1 win against San Jose State.

She scored on a free kick three minutes into overtime and assisted on Chelsea Deptula's score on a corner kick.

It was the second time this season that Fukuroku earned Player of the Week honors. Utah State defender Sydne Porter was named the Defensive Player of the Week.

The Rainbow Wahine continue conference play at home Friday when they host first-place Utah State at 5 p.m. at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. Hawai'i concludes its home schedule against Louisiana Tech Sunday at 5 p.m.

LAJOLA LOSES IN SEMIS

University of Hawai'i sophomore Dennis Lajola lost in the semifinals at the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association West-South Region Championships yesterday in Malibu, Calif.

Ninth-seeded Omar Altmann beat 13th-seeded Lajola, 6-2, 6-2.


VOLLEYBALL

UH REMAINS 9TH IN POLL

The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team remained ninth in the American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25 Poll yesterday.

The Rainbow Wahine (15-3 overall, 7-1 in Western Athletic Conference) swept WAC road matches against Utah State and and Nevada last week.

The top three spots remained unchanged with Penn State (20-0) followed by Nebraska (18-0) and Texas (14-2).

The Rainbow Wahine resume Western Athletic Conference play this week as they host San Jose State Friday and Fresno State Sunday.


GOLF

ASAO-SUZUKI MEDALISTS

Norman-Ganin Asao and Lance Suzuki shot 9-under-par 62 in qualifying yesterday to win medalist honors and second seeding for today's Aloha Section 4-Ball Match Play Championship at Oahu Country Club.

Defending champions Andrew Feldmann and Larry Stubblefield are seeded first in the two-day tournament that features 16 teams of 32 island professionals playing for a purse of $8,300. Today's first- and second-round matches start at 7 a.m.
