BeachBoys, Honu prevail

Buster Posey, who returned to Hawaii Winter Baseball after a brief stint at San Francisco's Instructional League, had three hits and four RBIs to lead Waikiki past the West Oahu , 8-5, yesterday at Hans L'Orange Park.

Posey, a catcher who was the No. 5 overall selection in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft, batted 3 for 5 to improve his batting average to .474. Fellow Giants farmhand Roger Kieschnick added a three-run double in the first inning that put the BeachBoys (8-11) ahead to stay.

Waikiki starter Andrew Brackman improved to 2-3 with five solid innings. He allowed five hits and one earned run while walking one and striking out four.

Greg Burns had two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs for West Oahu (10-9).

In the late game, Sung Woo Jang hit an RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to rally North Shore past Honolulu, 3-2.

Shawn Nottingham (1-1) earned the win for the Honu (7-12) after striking out two in a perfect ninth inning.

Shintaro Masuda hit a two-run homer for the Sharks (13-6).

NOTES

Former University of Hawai'i star Matt Inouye (Mid-Pacific '02) was added to the Honolulu Sharks roster as a "taxi squad" player. Inouye, a catcher, played in HWB last season, too. ... Also, the league added pitchers Kyle Drabek (Phillies), Brett Hunter (Athletics), Austin Chambliss (Rockies) and Cody Scarpetta (Brewers). They are replacing players who were either injured or reassigned.

Kelly Balanay had a match-high 21 kills as Hawai'i Pacific beat Grand Canyon, 25-22, 25-17, 18-25, 20-25, 15-13, last night in a Pacific West Conference match at St. Andrew's Priory gym.

Natasha Bell added 12 kills and Tricia Yoshimura 34 digs for the Sea Warriors (8-11, 5-4). Dana Edington had 14 kills and 16 digs for the Antelopes (13-10, 6-3).
