A woman was killed this afternoon in a head-on collision in Hau'ula that apparently involved a seven-ton military vehicle and closed Kamehameha Highway to rush hour traffic in both directions.

Officials initially closed the highway in both directions, but reopened the road shortly before 7:30.

Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city's Emergency Services Department, said a woman in her 50s was pronounced dead at the scene about 2:30 p.m.

The accident occurred about 2:20 p.m. in the vicinity of 53-729 Kamehameha Highway.

Police said the crash involved a military vehicle.

Meanwhile, Marine Corps Base Hawaii said in a press release that a seven-ton truck returning to base from the Kahuku Training Area was involved in a collision in Hau'ula.

The two Marines in the truck were uninjured but were expected to be taken to Tripler Army Medical Center for evaluation. The Marines and the truck are with 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment based at Kaneohe Bay. The Marines were returning from an exercise in preparation for deployment next spring.

Two other people injured in the accident were treated and released, Cheplic said.
