750 box jellyfish swarm south shores

Advertiser Staff

A total of 750 box jellyfish were found in the Waikiki/Ala Moana area yesterday, the expected peak of this latest influx.

Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city's Emergency Services Department said the influx is considered to be high.

A total of 45 stings were reported in Waikiki, two of them severe enough to send two women to a hospital in stable condition, Cheplic said in a statement recapping yesterday's numbers. Six stings were reported at Ala Moana Beach Park and one at Hanauma Bay, which saw a total of 10 box jellyfish.

Warning signs were posted yesterday at Waikiki Beach, Ala Moana Beach Park and Hanauma Bay. Lifeguards will assess the situation again today and make a determination whether additional warnings will be necessary, Cheplic said.

A jellyfish influx typically occurs seven to 10 days after a full moon.

Cheplic said all beach-goers should check in with lifeguards where possible at city beaches for an update on the jellyfish situation.
