SYDNEY, Australia — Robert Hurley of Australia broke the short-course world record in the 50-meter backstroke Sunday at a World Cup meet.
Hurley finished in 23.24 seconds Sunday to take 0.03 seconds off the previous mark set by Thomas Rupprath of Germany.
The Australian Institute of Sport swimmer said it was the first time he had worn a full bodysuit in competition.
"It was very unexpected but I am very happy," Hurley said. "Hopefully I can translate that into long course and really step up and make the team (for the Rome world championships) next year."
In other events, Olympic 1,500 freestyle champion Oussama Mellouli of Tunisia won the 200 and 1,500 freestyles, and the 200 individual medley to remain unbeaten in six races at the two-night meet.
On Saturday, Mellouli had won the 400 freestyle, and 100 and 400 individual medleys.
