A 17-year-old boy was killed today in a collision between a motorcycle and Jeep Cherokee in Haiku, the 12th traffic fatality this month in Hawai'i and Maui's 17th of the year.

The boy, identified by Maui police as Keoni Magliato of Haiku, was operating a light Hona motorcycle, possibly a dirt bike, which collided with the 1998 Cherokee at Kauhikoa Road and Kauhikoalani Place in Haiku at 4:41 p.m.

    Magliato died at the scene.

The Cherokee's driver, a 33-year-old Haiku man, and two passengers, ages 10 and 28, were not injured.

Speed, alcohol and drugs are being investigated as factors in the collision, said Maui Traffic Enforcement commander Lt. Robert Hill.

Today's fatal is Maui's third this month and second since Friday, which also involved a motorcyclist. To date, motorcyclist have accounted for 19 of Hawai'i's 87 traffic deaths: seven each on Maui and the Big Island, and five on O'ahu.
