Grants

  • University of Hawai'i-Manoa School of Social Work professor Noreen Mokuau has been awarded $300,000 from the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization to conduct research over the next two years on coping and recovery of Native Hawaiian women with breast cancer.

    The research project explores the feasibility of a culturally tailored intervention to enhance by building family support for Native Hawaiian women with breast cancer.

  • Parker School teacher Shelley Kaiyala has been awarded a grant of $12,000 from The Kohala Center to support a new sustainability program.

    Kaiyala is the coordinator of the Parker After-School University, the elementary school's afternoon education program. She maintains an organic garden with its participants and the lower school children. They care for and harvest plants ranging from native Hawaiian vegetation to common garden edibles.

  • Hawai'i Medical Service Association has donated 70 pre-owned Sprint Treo 650 Palm Pilots to Parents and Children Together. The Palm Pilots will be used to help educate and train disadvantaged people and improve communication between agencies.

  • Easter Seals Hawai'i has received a series of grants totaling close to $30,000 to support its programs and services for infants, children and young adults with disabilities.

    The Bank of Hawai'i Foundation awarded ESH $10,000 for a multipurpose, state-of-the-art training room at Napuakea, ESH's new West O'ahu service center.

    Traders for Charity gave $10,000 to inaugurate a program designed to help those with autism communicate through visual imagery.

    For the eighth consecutive year, Japan's pop singing sensation TUBE presented ESH with a grant for music-enrichment programs for youths and adults.
