NFL: Bollinger gets work with Cowboys' starters, but Phillips stands by Johnson

IRVING, Texas — Coach Wade Phillips said third-string quarterback Brooks Bollinger got "a couple of snaps" with the first-team offense Wednesday. However, Phillips tried to dispel any notion that the team wants to replace Brad Johnson.
Phillips said the Cowboys are simply trying to get Bollinger ready to be Johnson's backup. They are not getting Bollinger ready to take Johnson's place if things go haywire against the Giants.
"We think we can go with Brad and see what happens," Phillips said. "We're not going into the game saying, 'this guy's going, and we're going to pull him if he doesn't do anything.' We're going to go in with a more positive attitude."
Bollinger spent the last two weeks working with the scout team. The Cowboys changed that approach after watching Johnson struggle against Tampa Bay. The 40-year-old overthrew several open receivers and finished with only 122 passing yards.
Johnson said he's immersed himself in game film at the team's training complex. If anyone's grumbling about a quarterback change, it's news to him.
"I haven't heard that," Johnson said. "I haven't gotten into those thought processes. (I) just try to go out there and put my team in position to win. That's all I can do."
