UH's Flemings on leave

Advertiser Staff

Roderick Flemings is on a temporary leave of absence from the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team to be by the side of his ill grandfather in Texas.

Flemings, the crown jewel in this year's recruiting class, departed Honolulu last night for Dallas. He is not sure of a return date, and his status for Sunday's exhibition game against Hawai'i-Hilo is uncertain.

"Somebody who is very dear to him is gravely ill so it's more important for him to take care of that situation right now," Hawai'i head coach Bob Nash said. "We want him to miss as few days of class as possible, but how long he's out really depends on his family situation."

Flemings, a 6-foot-7 junior guard/forward, did not participate in yesterday's practice. He has been working with the first team at both small forward and shooting guard.

Without Flemings at practice, Lasha Parghalava started at shooting guard and Adhar Mayen was the first small forward yesterday.

Meanwhile, sophomore point guard Hiram Thompson returned to practice yesterday after sitting out the last week due to illness.
