Two young men were critically injured yesterday in a mo-ped-car collision near the Honolulu Academy of Arts on Beretania Street.
Police said a mo-ped with two young men aboard ran a red light as it traveled south on Ward Avenue. A Nissan Sentra traveling on Beretania Street hit the mo-ped about 4:45 a.m., causing the two riders to be thrown from the mo-ped, police said.
Police said neither mo-ped rider was wearing a helmet. The driver of the sedan was not injured.
Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Emergency Medical Services Department, said initial reports indicated one of those injured was a teen and the other in his 20s.
Honolulu police said the intersection was cleared and reopened at 7:30 a.m.
NOTE FOUND IN MURDER-SUICIDE
Police recovered a suicide note at the home of what officials believe was a murder-suicide on Lana'i Sunday, police reported yesterday.
Police said it appears that Gerry Batoon, 41, wrote a suicide note before shooting his estranged wife, Kim Batoon, 31, at about 12:34 p.m. Sunday at their 'Iliahi Street home.
The couple had five children, the county said. None was home at the time of the shooting. Relatives are caring for them, the county said in a news release.
Kim Batoon was in the process of moving out of the home. Police said a witness reported hearing Kim Batoon yelling for someone to call police, then heard several gunshots. A .22-caliber rifle was found at the scene.
There are no reported cases of domestic abuse in the home. Police said Gerry Batoon had one criminal conviction in 1989 for violating laws on where and how firearms may be kept.
LA'IE WOMAN HELD IN CAR-RAMMING
A 29-year-old La'ie woman was arrested late Sunday night after police said she rammed her car into a car driven by her husband in Kane'ohe.
The woman was being held in a police cellblock yesterday pending charges. She was arrested on suspicion of first-degree attempted murder.
Police said the woman was driving in La'ie when she spotted her husband driving his car with a woman in the passenger seat. The woman drove after her husband's car and tried to get him to pull over, police said.
The man refused to stop and the two vehicles continued to the Kahalu'u area, where police said the suspect drove her vehicle into her husband's car. Police officers, who had been responding to another call, discovered the two vehicles at the intersection of Hui Kelu and Hui 'Iwa streets about 11:50 p.m.
The 29-year-old woman was arrested at the scene. The female passenger in the other vehicle was treated at a hospital for minor injuries and released.

The victim was assaulted outside Burns Hall on East-West Road at about 9:15 p.m. Two males were seen fleeing in a white Toyota sedan toward Dole Street. Details of the incident and the condition of the victim were not available.
The first assailant was described as about 25 years old, 5 feet 4 inches to 5 feet 6 inches, and 140 to 150 pounds with brown, shaved hair, a white Quiksilver T-shirt, blue denim shorts and black athletic shoes. The second assailant is about 20 years old, 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 8 inches, 200 to 220 pounds with black goatee, gray tank top and blue jeans.
