Three brushfires near Kunia Road extinguished

Three engines and two tankers were dispatched to fight three brush fires this afternoon near the same location that briefly closed Kunia Road and required the assistance of an additional two engines, a Honolulu Fire Department spokesman said.

The general location of the three fires was approximately a half-mile on the Wahiawa side of Royal Kunia subdivision, according to HFD Capt. Terry Seelig. Firefighters got the alarm at 1:15 p.m., and all three fires were under control by 1:30 p.m., he said. No homes were ever in danger, although it took firefighters until 2:45 p.m. to extinguish all three blazes, said Seelig.

The largest of the fires covered about an acre. Another was around 4,000 square feet in size, and the smallest was about 200 square feet. Both lanes of Kunia Road were closed at one point, but soon one lane was opened to traffic, said Seelig. The road was reopened completely about an hour after firefighters arrived, he said.

Seelig said the cause of the fires has not been determined.
