A Marine killed in Afghanistan yesterday and identified by the Pentagon as being based out of Hawai'i actually is out of Okinawa, Japan, Marine Corps Base Hawai'i said.

The Pentagon said Capt. Jesse Melton III, 29, of Randallstown, Md., died "while supporting combat operations" in Parwan province, Afghanistan.

Melton was assigned to Headquarters Battery, 12th Marines, 3rd Marine Division, a news release said.

Capt. Binford Strickland, a spokesman at the Kane'ohe Bay Marine Corps base, said Melton is not on any rosters for 12th Marine Regiment Marines in Hawai'i.

Strickland said Melton is with the 12th Marine headquarters, which is based out of Okinawa.

WJZ-TV in Baltimore reported that Melton was killed when his vehicle hit a roadside bomb and that he had served in Iraq before.

The Pentagon also said another Marine, 1st Lt. Nicholas A. Madrazo, 25, of Bothell, Wash., was killed yesterday in Parwan province. Madrazo was identified as assigned to the Combat Logistics Battalion 37, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Okinawa, Japan.
