RIVER HILLS, Wis. — Steve Wilson of Ocean Springs, Miss., defeated Todd Mitchell 5-and-4 today in the 36-hole finale of the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship to earn an invitation to next year's Masters.
The 38-year-old Wilson one-putted nine times in the first 18 holes to take a 2-up lead into the afternoon session U.S. Golf Association event. He finished with 14-one putts in 32 holes.
Mitchell, 30, Bloomington, Ill., struggled with his putting, including a three-putt to lose the par-4 18th hole in the morning round and go 2-down.
In the afternoon, Wilson ran his lead to 5-up on the 25th hole of the match. Mitchell drove into the trees, sent his second shot to right of the green and his third into a bunker. He had a bogey to Wilson's par.
Wilson closed the match with a par on the 14th hole to go 5-up with four holes remaining.
