Hawai'i's Parker McLachlin, who won his first PGA Tour event last month at the Legends Reno-Tahoe Open, is coming home to conduct a free hour-long clinic at Waikoloa Beach Resort. McLachlin, who represents the resort on tour, will be at the Kings' Course driving range Sept. 19, beginning at 4:30 p.m.
McLachlin, the 1996 state high school champion for Punahou, shot 62 in the second round at Reno and rode that to a seven-shot victory. He holds the course record on Waikoloa's Beach Course, where he carded the magic number of 59.
McLachlin, 29, turned pro in 2003 and earned his PGA Tour card last year.
JUNIOR MATCH PLAY
Half the champions from last year's inaugural event are back to defend titles at this weekend's Hawai'i State Junior Golf Association Match Play Championship. Matches begin at 6:33 a.m. and 1:18 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Ka'anapali Royal.
Former state high school champion Anna Jang will defend her 15-18 girls championship. Justin Keiley is back in the 13-14 boys and Kelli Oride in the 13-14 girls. The top 48 players from the July point list, between the ages of 11 and 18, compete in five age divisions.
Others in the field include Lorens Chan, Alex Chiarella, Alina Ching, Marissa Chow, David Fink, Cassy Isagawa, Taeksoo Kim, Ryan Kuroiwa, Cyd Okino, Kalena Preus and Britney Yada.
On the other end of the spectrum, 11 women who are 80-something will tee off with the rest of the field Monday at Waikele in the Hawai'i State Women's Golf Association Senior Championship.
A year ago, six women older than 80 played at Barbers Point. Mia Hew won last year's overall title. This year's 18-hole event has a shotgun start at noon.
PATRIOT DAY
Aloha Section PGA courses raised more than $10,000 in support of Patriot Golf Day over Labor Day Weekend. More than 20 facilities participated.
Golf facilities asked patrons to donate $1 or however much they would like to contribute. Each facility offered different promotions to drive interest in the cause. Ko Olina offered a free clinic and giveaways, while Turtle Bay had a drawing for a commemorative Patriot Golf Day TaylorMade Driver. The Dunes at Maui Lani is extending special rates to all "First Responders" throughout September.
Patriot Golf Day is a joint initiative of the PGA of America and USGA. It benefits the Folds of Honor Foundation (Fold sofHonor.org). Sparked by the vision and dedication of Major Dan Rooney, an F-16 fighter pilot, PGA Professional, and USGA member, Patriot Golf Day raised more than $1 million last year for scholarships that have since been awarded to spouses and children of military heroes who were either seriously disabled or lost their lives in the line of duty.
COURSE CLOSURE
Ko Olina Golf Club is closed Sept. 22 for aerification. Special "aerification rates" will be in effect from Sept. 23 to 30.
