LAHAINA - A brush fire came within 10 feet of a building on the Princess Nahienaena Elementary School campus Thursday afternoon while scorching a quarter-acre of brush, The Maui News reported today.
Maui Fire Department Battalion Chief Jeff Shaffer said there were no damages and no injuries from the fire that began around 2:10 p.m. just after school had let out. He said faculty members kept students away from fire burning a field near a school bus stop.
A crew with Goodfellow Bros. Construction working near the school provided a water tanker and a bulldozer to help fight the blaze, Shaffer said. He said the cause of the blaze was undetermined.
The fire alarm came in at 2:10 p.m. with the first units on the scene at 2:19 p.m. The fire was under control at 2:47 p.m. and extinguished at 3:30 p.m. The Lahaina and Napili engine crews, the Lahaina ladder crew and a tanker crew from Wailea responded to the fire, Shaffer said.
