Youth surfers will get numerous opportunities to compete over the next few months.

The Hard Rock Cafe Surf Series and the National Scholastic Surfing Association Hawai'i series will run events every month throughout the school year.

Last weekend, both organizations ran events, with the Hard Rock Cafe Surf Series at Kewalo Basin, and the NSSA at Lahaina Harbor, Maui.

Among the standouts at the Hard Rock Cafe Surf Series contest were Keanu Asing of 'Ewa Beach and Matty Costa of Wai'anae.

Asing won the junior men's division, and placed third in the open men's division. Costa won the open men's division and placed third in the junior men's division.

The Hard Rock Cafe series is run by the Hawai'i Surfing Association. The top-ranked surfers from the series will qualify for the 2009 U.S. Championships at California.

At the NSSA contest at Lahaina Harbor, Maui's Tanner Hendrickson was the standout surfer. He won three divisions, including the prestigious open men's division.

The Surf n Sea shop in Hale'iwa will host the Stand Up Paddle Demo Day on Sept. 20.

Various stand up paddle (SUP) boards will be available for sample tryouts, free of charge. The boards will be available between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., and expert riders will be available to provide lessons.

FLORIDA'S SLATER TOP MALE IN SURFER POLL

Kelly Slater of Florida was named the top male surfer by the Surfer Poll for a record 14th time.

Voting was open to fans around the world through Surfer Magazine and surfer mag.com. Results of the poll were announced this week.

Andy Irons of Kaua'i finished fifth in the voting, and his brother Bruce Irons was seventh.

Sofia Mulanovich of Peru was voted the top female surfer.

Carissa Moore of Honolulu finished third, and Coco Ho of Sunset Beach was fifth. Moore and Ho are both high school students.

Among other awards, Maui's Ian Walsh won the Coors Heavy Water Award, Mark Healey of O'ahu's North Shore won the Worst Wipeout, Kalani Chapman of O'ahu's North Shore won Best Tube Ride, and Maui's Clay Marzo won Best Male Performance for the video "Just Add Water."

The Surfer Poll has been conducted every year since 1963.
