INDIANAPOLIS— Italy's Valentino Rossi has won the inaugural Red Bull Indianapolis GP after the race was halted eight laps from the finish because of heavy rain and wind.
The victory on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway's 2.6-mile road course today is Rossi's seventh this season and fourth in a row, moving him closer to his sixth MotoGP series championship with four races to go. It is also his 69th career win, breaking the record he shared with former rider Giacomo Agostini.
Rossi passed Nicky Hayden of Owensboro, Ky., on the 14th lap and took a lead of 5.972 seconds after 20 laps before the riders were red-flagged into the pits because of the rain.
Jorge Lorenzo of Spain was third and Casey Stoner of Australia was fourth.
