Runners from Japan capture Maui Marathon titles

Junichi Kawabata and Youko Yamazawa, both from Japan, ran away from the field yesterday to capture the men's and women's races of the 38th Maui Marathon.
Kawabata finished in 2 hours, 36 minutes, 24 seconds on the 26.2-mile course that started in Kahului and ended in Ka'anapali. Clement Simon of France was second in 2:50:05 and Yoshiaki Mikami of Japan third in 2:52:47.
Yamazawa clocked 3:09:40, followed by Sharon Moran of Ho-nolulu in 3:25:37 and Chiharu Mikami of Japan in 3:26:09.
Michael Dawdy, of Sunnyvale, Texas, won the men's race of the Maui Half Marathon in 1:14:38. Krissandra Berens, of Kula, Maui, was the fastest woman in 1:27:39.
The two races drew more than 2,234 entrants from 19 countries.
TAYLOR, NAUGHTON WIN
Andrew Taylor and Juliann Naughton won the men's and women's races of the Windward Half Marathon yesterday.
Taylor finished in 1 hour, 19 minutes, 5.7 seconds. Naughton clocked 1:41:28.4.
Andrew Kamikawa (18:41.0) and Katie Huinker (21:37.7) won the Windward 5K event.

UH RIPS SAN FRANCISCO
Senior defender Tehane Higa scored two goals and senior midfielder/forward Kelli-Anne Chang added a goal and two assists as the University of Hawai'i women's soccer team defeated San Francisco, 5-0, yesterday in the final game of the Pacific Fall Tournament in Stockton, Calif.
Vanessa Bailey scored her first goal of the season and Taryn Fukuroku added her third for the Rainbow Wahine (2-3-1).
Kori Lu and Nicole McClure teamed to shut out the Dons (3-3-1).
UHH WINS, CU LOSES
Adele Letro scored 1 minute, 11 seconds into overtime as Hawaii-Hilo beat Hawaii Pacific, 3-2, yesterday at Kea'au field on the Big Island.
Megan Pachecano scored two goals for Hilo (2-3). Caitlyn McNeeley and Ashley Dolan scored for HPU (2-4).
Elsewhere, Olivia Dupon and Morgan LeFever scored as Academy of Art (Calif.) defeated Chaminade, 2-0, at Saint Louis field.
PARALYMPICS
ARNOULT'S TEAM FALLS
Florence Gravellier and Arlette Racineux of France defeated Beth Arnoult and Kaitlyn Verfuerth of the United States, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, yesterday to capture the bronze medal in women's wheelchair doubles tennis at the Paralympics in Beijing.
Arnoult, of Pa'ia, Maui, and Verfuerth pulled away from a 3-3 tie in the first set. The second set was also tied 3-3 before the French team took control and carried the momentum into the third and deciding set.
"I'm proud of how Beth and Kaitlyn fought tonight," said U.S. head coach Dan James.
