TOKYO — Grand champion Hakuho suffered his first defeat in the 15-day Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament on Thursday, halting his winning streak at four.
The 23-year-old Mongolian was quickly shoved out of the ring by No. 2 maegashira Kisenosato on the fifth day of the 15-day sumo tournament at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo. Hakuho, who won the Nagoya tournament in July, is aiming to grab his eighth tournament victory.
His archrival, fellow Mongolian grand champion Asashoryu, scored his fourth victory in the tournament by lifting Kyokutenho, also a Mongolian, and quickly tossing him out of the ring. The 27-year-old popular sumo wrestler missed the Nagoya tournament due to injury, and is aiming for his 23rd title.
Kotooshu of Bulgaria also picked up his second victory against top maegashira Asasekiryu. The 25-year-old European wrestler aggressively shoved his Mongolian opponent out of the ring. Kotooshu made sumo history in May by becoming the first European to win an Emperor's Cup.
Ozeki Kotomitsuki beat Baruto, a 23-year-old Estonian. Mongolian sekiwake Ama won against Miyabiyama by tossing him out of the ring in a matter of seconds.
