NBA: Heat's Beasley Fined $50,000 after rookie program investigation

Bloomberg News

Miami Heat rookie forward Michael Beasley was fined $50,000 by the National Basketball Association for his role in an incident this month that led to two others being ousted from an orientation program.

Beasley, the second overall pick out of Kansas State University, got a steeper fine than rookies Mario Chalmers and Darrell Arthur after initially failing to cooperate with the NBA investigation, the league said in a news release.

Chalmers and Arthur were each fined $20,000 and sent home from the symposium in Rye Brook, New York, after security found women and signs of marijuana in their room. NBA rookies aren't permitted to have guests during the program.

Chalmers, 22, and Arthur, 20, apologized and denied using marijuana. They'll have to attend the symposium, which helps rookies transition to professional basketball, next year. The NBA didn't say whether Beasley was sent home from the program or whether he'd have to attend it again in 2009.

Chalmers, a guard, is with the Miami Heat and Arthur, a forward, plays with the Memphis Grizzlies. Both helped lead Kansas to college basketball's national championship last season.
