Kaiser Permanente Hawaii has announced that Valisa Saunders has won the American Geriatrics Society Clinician of the Year award. Saunders, a certified gerontological nurse practitioner, received the award at the society's annual scientific meeting in Washington, D.C., for her dedication and contributions in the advancement of gerontology practice and quality of care. It is the first time a nonphysician has received this award.
Saunders' 22-year career in gerontological care at Kaiser Permanente Hawaii has focused on improving the quality of elderly care in Hawai'i.
A team of scientists from the Bishop Museum, U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service in Washington, D.C., the Natural History Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen, and Oxford University Museum of Natural History have completed a new index of more than 156,000 fly species names. This latest version of the Biosystematic Database of World Diptera represents one of the largest online indexes for any group of organisms.
The Bishop Museum has been closely involved with the planning, development and organization of the database since its inception and is now helping bring the new version to the public.
The Wai'anae Wastewater Treatment Plant, run by the City and County of Honolulu's Department of Environmental Services, received the Platinum Peak Performance Award recently from the National Association of Clean Water Agencies.
The treatment plant earned the Platinum 6 Award for six consecutive years of perfect compliance with its National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit.
Lt. Gen. Jack Stultz, chief, Army Reserve, and commanding general, U.S. Army Reserve Command, recently presented the 2008 Brig. Gen. Theodore Roosevelt Jr. Distinguished Legislator Award to U.S. Sen. Daniel Inouye.
Inouye has distinguished himself in his enduring support in matters for the Army Reserve, championed defense issues that strengthen national security as well as personnel issues that enhance the quality of life for those in uniform and their families.
