Rainbow Wahine, Grizzlies battle to 0-0 draw in soccer

Injuries hurt the University of Hawai'i women's soccer team last night in a 0-0 tie last night in the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Soccer Classic.

The Rainbow Wahine tied Montana after 90 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium in front of 358 spectators.

Hawai'i (2-3-2) concludes the tournament against No. 23 UC Santa Barbara (5-2-0) Sunday at 5 p.m. Montana (1-5-1) plays UC Santa Barbara at 7 tonight.

"It had a lot to do with injuries," Hawai'i coach Pinsoom Tenzing said. "The whole team has been shaken up. I'm proud of the way we played."

UH senior captain Tehane Higa left the game with a sprained left ankle with 20 minutes left in the first half, leaving a defense that has struggled this season without its leader. The Rainbow Wahine also played without forward Ambree Ako, who was out with a leg injury. Both are Western Athletic Conference Preseason Players of the Year. Outside midfielders Alexis Choi and Kristen Oshiro both are dealing with knee issues.

"We played with two freshmen in the backline, and they looked a little nervous," Tenzing said. "It's hard to score goals when you don't have the experience. You don't get the numbers in the penalty box. And that's where injuries really hurt."

The Rainbow Wahine, who went 11-0-1 at home last season, have yet to win a game at home in three attempts this year. Montana is struggling with scoring this season, with three goals in seven games. Hawai'i has found the net with a 2.43 goals per game average (17 in seven games) but has had problems closing out games.

"Everyone was so lax. I tried to pump them up but there's only so much you can do," Hawai'i senior captain Taryn Fukuroku said. "We need to bring the intensity from the start of the game. Maybe we took Montana too lightly. We just get too lax. That's been our problem. Even when we go up in goals, we give them up."

It was a low-action first half, with UH dominating what scarce offensive activity there was. The Rainbow Wahine outshot Montana 8-1, with three of their shots on goal.

It seemed like most of the activity by both teams happened with 25 minutes left in the regulation.

Hawai'i's first scoring opportunity in the second half started with defender Nicole Mikula, who passed it wide to Choi. Choi then sent the ball to Fukuroku, who touched the ball to the endline and crossed it, only to find no one on the other end of the pass in the 67th minute.

A few minutes later Fukuroku sent a 30-yard free kick into the 18-yard box but a diving attempt by Kelli-Anne Chang missed.

Montana forward Carmen Reyes had a header on goal off a cross but goalkeeper Kori Lu stopped the attempt in the 73rd minute.

Another Rainbow Wahine free kick, this time a 40-yarder by defender Chelsea Deptula, bounced in the 18-yard box, but no Hawai'i player could get a foot on it with eight minutes to go.

The Rainbow Wahine had two solid opportunities in the second overtime. On a counterattack, Hawai'i freshman midfielder Kaylee Kihara brought the ball up and passed it to Chang, but her shot was stopped on a diving save by Grace Harris two minutes in. Just after that midfielder Kristyn Shapka, a transfer from Montana, crossed a ball into Fukuroku from the right sideline, and Fukuroku finished the play on a diving header, but again Harris was there.

With 10 seconds left, Montana's Brandee Marone turned and volleyed the ball point-blank, but her shot went right to Lu.

"Maybe when (Higa) went out, and with (Oshiro) and (Choi) being hurt, maybe it played a factor in how we normally play," Fukuroku said.
