Find your view in the Bible

By Russell Stephen Pang

If you were asked what is your world view, how would you respond?

Would there be an uncomfortable silence? Would you share a Christian perspective?

God expresses his world view in one verse, John 3:16: "For God so loved the world that he gave his only son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life."

Could you define your world view using scripture? Are there verses which readily come to mind?

Perhaps this exercise may help. (It's an exercise with no right or wrong answers — you learn about yourself.)

To begin, simply gather your bible(s), paper, and pens. Find a quiet spot and meditate on Psalm 46:10: "Be still and know that I am God. I am exalted among the nations, I am exalted in the earth."

Let's hope, as self-talk diminishes, your mind becomes still. As thoughts come, write them down or look up verses.

Perhaps you'll write how you think about God. Or how you think about family and friends.

Or how you think about life, your purpose for being.

From your list, select the three verses that best reflect your world view at this time in your life.

Certainly, there are many inspirational, encouraging, and comforting verses. So, to select only three could be a challenge. After three verses are chosen, your next task is to delete one verse so you will define your Christian world view using two verses.

Your final task is to select one verse to represent your world view.

Personally, my Christian world view is expressed in three verses.

My third verse is Matthew 7:12: "So then, whatever you desire that others would do to and for you, even so do also to and for them, for this is (sums up) the law and the prophets."

My second verse is Proverbs 3:5: "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; lean not unto thine own understanding."

My primary, favorite, life verse is Galatians 2:20: "I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me."

I'm glad this is merely an exercise and that other wonderful verses (Matthew 6:33, Mark 12:30-31, Luke 9:23, Philippians 4:13, Psalm 19:14, Psalm 23:1, 2nd Corinthians 5:14-15, Romans 12:1-2, etc.) can be used to explain my world view.
