THE FIRST MANOA JAZZ FESTIVAL

The event headliner is world-class saxophonist Devin Phillips and the New Orleans Straight Ahead band. Taking the stage first are Hawai'i performers: the Noel Okimoto 'Ohana and the Honolulu Jazz Quartet (John Kolivas, Dan Del Negro, Adam Baron and Tim Tsukiyama). Cajun food by Kevin's Two Boots will be available. Phillips was born and raised in New Orleans. He formed New Orleans Straight Ahead in 2005. After Hurricane Katrina forced Phillips to evacuate New Orleans, he reformed the band with other evacuees in Portland, Ore. Phillips has performed at international jazz festivals, and toured and recorded with top names such as Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Eddie Palmieri, The Headhunters, the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, Lenny Kravitz and Los Hombres Caliente (with whom he recorded two award-winning albums). CD releases by Manoa Jazz Festival artists include Noel Okimoto's " 'Ohana"; Honolulu Jazz Quartet's "Sounds of the City" and "Tenacity"; and Devin Phillips' "Wade in the Water," which was recorded one year after Hurricane Katrina.
