Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge will have a "fee-free" weekend this Saturday and Sunday.
The free event is in honor of National Public Lands Day, a nationwide celebration of the 655 million acres of forests, parks, refuges, and open spaces that U.S. residents own, said a release from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.
Tomorrow, the refuge celebrates "Nene Awareness Day," a state designation to educate the public about the Hawaiian goose, the state bird.
Free, ranger-guided hikes onto Crater Hill will be offered on Friday and on Tuesdays and Thursdays from Sept. 30 to Oct. 18. The hike is moderately strenuous and starts at 9 a.m.
To participate in a hike, call 639-1388 and indicate the day you wish to hike and number in your party. Space is limited. A ranger will call you back to confirm your reservation.
