Public imput sought on Kaua'i ag park options

Advertiser Staff

The deadline to submit comments on the three options for proposed 75-acre agriculture park in the Crater Hill area of Kilauea on Kaua'i is Oct. 24.

According to the county website, there are relatively small variations among the alternatives. For example, differences in total farm acreage across the three plans range from 56.6 acres to 59.6 acres.

In other ways, the alternatives demonstrate significantly different options. Issues that emerge from the alternatives include:

  • Number of lots and, therefore, number of farmers that can be accommodated within the agricultural park.

  • Size of lots.

  • Whether farming systems — conventional versus organic — should be designated for particular areas of the agricultural park.

  • The potential effect of including conventional and organic systems on common facilities, such as the irrigation reservoir and recycling/composting center.

  • Desirability of including non-productive uses, such as an energy farm, recycling/composting center, and Sunshine Market — and how much land should be allocated to these uses.

Comments can be sent by fax, 808-241-6399; hand delivered to the Office of Economic Development at the Lihu'e Civic Center, Mo'ikeha Building, Suite 200, or sent online to btokioka@kauai.gov btokioka@kauai.gov> ,
