HPU soccer edges UH-Hilo

Mark Rogers scored in the 89th minute as Hawai'i Pacific edged Hawai'i-Hilo, 2-1, yesterday in a Pacific West Conference men's soccer match at HPU's Atherton Field.

Adam Rieke also scored and Linus Ekden assisted on both goals for the Sea Warriors (3-3-1, 1-0).

Drew Geis scored for the Vulcans (5-2, 0-1).

Also at Atherton Field, Adele Letro scored two goals as HPU beat Hilo, 5-0, in a women's match.

Melissa Grant, Alyssa Salvador and Megan Pachecano also scored for the Sea Warriors (2-5, 1-0). Tami Kalaiwaa had two shots on goal for the Vulcans (4-3, 0-1).

Elsewhere in the PacWest:

  • Emily Mearns and Natasha Aiono scored as Brigham Young-Hawai'i (6-2, 2-1) beat host Notre Dame de Namur (3-6, 1-1) in a women's match at Belmont, Calif.

  • Doug Hansen made four saves, but Brigham Young-Hawai'i (2-6-1, 0-2-1) lost to host Notre Dame de Namur (6-2-1, 2-0) in a men's match at Belmont, Calif.

  • Jamie Lindstrom scored two goals and Marissa Minor made 13 saves, but Chaminade (1-5, 0-3) lost to host Dixie State (4-3-1, 2-0), 5-2, in a women's match at St. George, Utah.

  • Garrett Barker took five shots on goal, but Chaminade (1-8-1) lost to host Dixie State (1-3-1), 4-0, in a men's match at St. George, Utah.


    VOLLEYBALL

    HAWAI'I-HILO SWEEPS

    Josimara Pinheiro had 13 kills and Fabiane Seben 11 as Hawaii-Hilo beat Notre Dame de Namur, 25-8, 25-23, 25-17, last night in a Pacific West Conference volleyball match at the UHH gym.

    Kaniu Hernandez added eight kills and Seben contributed seven digs for the Vulcans (13-4, 3-1).

    Breanna Morales had six kills for the Argos (1-18, 0-4).

    CROSS COUNTRY



    HPU MEN PLACE 22ND

    The Hawai'i Pacific men's cross country team finished 22nd among 28 teams at the Stanford Invitational yesterday in Stanford, Calif.

    HPU's Andreas Schwab placed 72nd in the 8-kilometer race in 26 minutes, 25 seconds.

    HPU finished 24th — led by Johanna Berggren (23:30, 107th) — and the University of Hawai'i — led by Mariana Monasi (23:58, 131st) — placed 30th in the women's 6-kilometer race that featured 33 teams.


    GOLF

    UH MEN FINISH 16TH

    The University of Hawai'i men's golf team shot a 316 yesterday to finish last with a 68-over-par total of 932 in the 16-team field of the William H. Tucker Invitational at Albuquerque, N.M.

    UNLV won with 283—852. UNLV's Eddie Olson and Colorado's Derek Tolan shared medalist honors at 5-under 211. Robert Berton led UH with 77—224, tying for 29th.
