PASADENA, Calif. — Nearly 1,000 people sought medical attention for heat-related issues during the UCLA-Fresno State football game at the Rose Bowl, officials said today.
About 600 people were treated Saturday, including 16 who were hospitalized, Pasadena fire officials said. More than 370 people requested aspirin or other items to deal with the heat.
Temperatures were in the low to mid-90s Saturday afternoon — typical for September.
The number of medical calls may have been larger because pregame activities that include heavy drinking at tailgate parties and 74,000 fans filing into the stadium before kickoff, said Lisa Derderian, a spokeswoman for the Pasadena Fire Department.
Most of the patients complained of dizziness, nausea and dehydration and did not fit a pattern of age or gender, Derderian said.
