No. 21 Washington edges Hawaii in soccer match, 2-1
Advertiser Staff
Jenna Robison bent in a free kick from 30 yards out nine minutes into overtime as No. 21 Washington beat Hawai'i, 2-1, yesterday in a non-conference women's soccer match at Seattle.
Kellye Joswick scored at the 1:37 mark for the Huskies, who matched a school-best start by improving to 9-1.
Ambree Ako scored her team-high fifth goal of the season for the Rainbow Wahine (3-4-3), who conclude a three-match road trip tomorrow against Cal State Fullerton in Fullerton, Calif.
Yesterday's match appeared headed into a second overtime period when Hawai'i was whistled for a foul, giving UW a re-start.
Standing on the far right side of the field, Robison ran up to the ball and sent a high, arching shot that went over the head of goalie Kori Lu and hooked into the far side of the net. The first goal of the season by Robison sent the crowd of 1,660 into a frenzy.
"We created plenty of chances but finishing becomes a problem when you're tired," said UW head coach Lesle Gallimore. "Jenna is one of our most skillful players. She comes off the bench late to hit a free kick we know she is capable of and it seals the deal for us. It was a good mental challenge for us and a good physical challenge."
The Huskies outshot the Rainbow Wahine 18-7, including 6-4 on goal. Lu made four saves and Ako was credited with three shots, including two on goal.
Ako scored at the 23:32 mark when Mari Punzal sent a through ball past the Husky defense and Ako flicked a shot past goalkeeper Alex Phillips into the lower left corner of the net.
