Flexing the same muscles in a bigger ballpark, 'Iolani went deep again against Mid-Pacific yesterday and held on for an 8-4 victory in Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball action.

The Raiders, ranked No. 1 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, remained unbeaten at 9-0 in ILH play; the Owls, ranked No. 4, fell to 6-3.

'Iolani blanked MPI, 14-0, on March 24 after hitting five home runs at the Owls' cozy Damon Field. Breland Almadova — who hit two homers in that game — went yard again yesterday at the Raiders' more expansive field with a two-run shot that put 'Iolani in front, 3-2, in the bottom of the third inning.

Buen Hatanaka, who also homered March 24, added another three-run shot in the fifth to make it 8-2.

"This team works so hard, in the weight room and in the field," said Almadova, a senior center fielder who has signed a letter of intent to play for the University of Hawai'i next season. "One through nine (in the lineup), everybody backs each other up."

After two intense, scoreless innings, Mid-Pacific took a 1-0 lead in the third after Matt McDaniel walked, took second on Derek Tan's single and scored when the Raiders overthrew first base on Nick Tasaka's bunt single. Tan, who advanced to third on the error, made it 2-0 by scoring on Wade Tamaru's groundout to first.

But 'Iolani cut it to 2-1 in the bottom of the third when Kevin Barayuga was hit by a pitch with one out, advanced to second on Kela Marciel's sacrifice bunt and scored on Jensen Park's single to center.

Almadova then launched a towering 380-foot shot over the center-field fence to make it 3-2.

The Raiders added two runs in the fourth — again with two outs — when pinch-hitter Trent Miyashiro singled to center to score Hatanaka and Reyn Nagamine.

The run support appeared to settle down 'Iolani starter JR Bunda, who threw 46 pitches in the first two innings but retired the side in order in the fourth and fifth.

"This was a good game for JR, he was fighting through the rough spots," Raiders coach Dean Yonamine said. "I think Breland's home run energized him, and scoring runs helped him get a second wind, got him going confidence-wise."

'Iolani gained a bigger cushion in the fifth, when Park led off with a walk and Jarrett Arakawa singled to right, setting the table for Hatanaka's three-run blast over the left-field fence.

The Owls closed it to 8-4 in the seventh after McDaniel walked with one out, Tan followed with a double to left and both scored on Tamaru's single to left.

But Arakawa — who came on to relieve Bunda in the sixth — got a groundout to second to end the game.

"We played much better this time, but (Bunda) was tough when he had to be and we just couldn't take advantage when he was in trouble," MPI coach Dunn Muramaru said. "And Arakawa, he'll give up a couple hits, but (eventually) he'll do his job."
