Olympics: Brazilian billionaire gives $2.5M to 2016 Rio bid

Associated Press

RIO DE JANEIRO — A Brazilian billionaire has donated $2.5 million to Rio de Janeiro's bid for the 2016 Olympics.

Eike Batista owns mining, energy, steel and oil companies whose worth is estimated at nearly $20 billion.

On Tuesday, he presented a check to the president of the Brazilian Olympic Committee. The ceremony also was attended by the Rio de Janeiro state governor, the sports minister and Rio de Janeiro mayor.

Olympic bid organizers did not immediately say how Batista's donation will be used.

Rio is vying with Chicago, Tokyo and Madrid for the 2016 Summer Games. The winner will be decided by the International Olympic Committee on Oct. 2.
