Cycling: Schumacher appeals 2-year ban for doping at Tour

Associated Press

LAUSANNE, Switzerland — The Court of Arbitration for Sport said Wednesday it has received an appeal from cyclist Stefan Schumacher against his worldwide two-year ban for doping at the 2008 Tour de France.

The International Cycling Union, the governing body for the sport, said last month it had suspended the 27-year-old German from all competition until Jan. 21, 2011. He had earlier been banned by the French anti-doping authority from racing in France.

"The appeal is directed against the UCI decision to extend the French ban worldwide," the court said in a statement.

The CAS, world sport's highest court of appeal, said no date has been set for a hearing and a ruling is unlikely before the end of August.

Schumacher won two individual time trial stages at the Tour last July and wore the yellow jersey for two days as race leader.

France's anti-doping authority, the AFLD, said in September it found traces of the endurance-boosting hormone CERA in Schumacher's blood samples taken before and during the race, after it had developed a new test for the banned substance.

Schumacher has denied doping but was dropped by his new team, Quick Step, before the 2009 season.
