Finding a way to finally cool down 'Iolani's torrid bats, Kamehameha held off the Raiders, 6-3, yesterday at Ala Wai Field to move into a tie atop the Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball standings.

Both teams are 10-1 in ILH play. 'Iolani, ranked No. 1 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, defeated the No. 3-ranked Warriors, 9-6, in the regular season opener three weeks ago and entered yesterday averaging 12 runs per game.

Senior right-hander Alika Pruett scattered seven hits in a complete-game effort and Kamehameha broke a 2-2 tie with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

"Last time I pitched against them, I had trouble, but today we found the right spots and didn't get hurt as much," said Pruett, who struck out six and walked one while throwing 106 pitches. "My arm felt good, and our dugout helped because they were super loud and we feed off of that."

The Warriors took a 2-0 lead in the third inning after back-to-back RBI singles by Kewby Meyer and Keanu Carmichael, but the Raiders answered in the top of the fourth with Kela Marciel's two-run double down the left-field line.

Raiders starter Sheldon Lee started the sixth inning with a 2-0 count on Meyer and was replaced by Jarrett Arakawa, who then surrendered a single. Carmichael's sacrifice bunt moved Meyer to second, and Arlie Johnson brought him home with a double after left fielder Jensen Park couldn't come up with the diving catch.

A pair of two-out walks loaded the bases, and another walk made it 4-2. Kalei Hanawahine then singled to center to bring in two more runs and make it 6-2.

"We can't walk guys against Kamehameha, they're too tough," 'Iolani coach Dean Yonamine said. "One through nine (in their lineup) can swing the bat, so we can't give them anything free."

The Raiders staged a mini rally in the seventh, as Breland Almadova tripled to left-center and scored on Arakawa's single to center. But Pruett induced the next batter into a game-ending 1-6-3 double play.

"The thing I really liked was we played well on defense and pitched well," said Warriors coach Vern Ramie, noting third baseman Josh Wong's diving stop and one-hop throw to first to retire Park leading off the seventh. "If we can do those two things, plus get a couple timely hits like we did, we'll be OK."
