The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary has opened its $6.5 million beachfront learning center in Kihei, Maui.
The 4,600-square-foot, single-story facility is adjacent to the historic Ko'ie'ie fishpond. The learning center houses offices and classroom space for school groups and public programs.
Among those attending Saturday's grand opening were U.S. Sens. Daniel Inouye and Daniel Akaka and Hawaiian cultural practitioner Kimokeo Kapahulehua, who spearheaded efforts to restore the ancient Hawaiian fishpond.
