MPI rallies past Kamehameha, 10-9

The Mid-Pacific baseball team was down big in the final inning yesterday against Kamehameha.
But these Owls showed there is a big difference between being down, and being down-and-out.
Instead of having the door slammed shut on them, they pushed back and turned the tables on their opponents.
Ryan Muraoka's two-out, two-run double tied the game in the bottom of the seventh and Michael Arakaki followed with the game-winning single as host Mid-Pacific rallied for five runs in the inning to beat Kamehameha, 10-9.
At game's end, Mid-Pacific coach Dunn Muramaru could only point toward his team, shake his head and say, "Don't talk to me. Talk to these guys."
Mid-Pacific, ranked No. 4 in The Advertiser's Top 10 poll, improved to 10-3 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. No. 1 Kamehameha fell to 11-2 and dropped to second behind 'Iolani (12-1).
"I still think we have a chance at the state champs," Muraoka said. "I still think it's going to be a battle for everybody. There aren't going to be any easy games."
The Owls scored their first run of the seventh on Derek Tan's one-out single to right, which plated Justin Protacio. The second out of the inning was recorded on a fielder's choice ground ball by Nick Tasaka, scoring Matthew McDaniel to make it 9-7.
Kamehameha left-handed reliever Chris Pascual was then lifted for righty Alika Pruett.
"(Pascual) probably could've stayed in the game, but we thought we had a better matchup bringing Alika in with all the right-handed hitters they had coming up ... three in a row," said Kamehameha coach Vern Ramie.
Wade Tamaru singled and Tasaka was able to reach third when the center fielder bobbled the ball.
Muraoka then lined the first pitch of his at-bat to the fence in right-center with Warriors center fielder Jacob Meyer coming up just short of making a spectacular grab while crashing into the fence.
Tasaka and Tamaru scored on the play to tie it at 9-9.
"I was nervous, but I knew I did it before so I could do it again," said Muraoka, who added he had big hits from "far back" as a youth.
Arakaki followed with the game winner on a 1-2 pitch, a soft liner that fell in front of the Warriors left fielder.
The third baseman cut off the throw and the relay to the plate was wide as Muraoka slid in safely.
"I was just looking fastball and I hit it," Arakaki said.
Added Ramie: "You have to give them credit. They got some big hits. The last inning, we pitched behind in the count a lot."
Kamehameha scored one in the second and three in the third on Arlie Johnson's three-run double.
The Owls got one back in the bottom of the third to make it 4-1, but the Warriors scored four in the fifth, highlighted by Keanu Carmichael's two-run homer to center.
Mid-Pacific scored four in the bottom of the fifth to get within 8-5. Protacio doubled in a run, Tan had a run-scoring single, and two other runs scored on a fielder's choice grounder and successful double steal.
The Warriors tacked on a run in the sixth on an RBI single by Kewby Meyer.
