Hawaii March layoffs lowest in eight months, government says

The number of Hawai'i workers let go in so-called mass layoffs in March was the lowest in eight months, according to new data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The bureau reported there were five of the so-called mass layoffs involving 376 employeees last month in which companies let go at least 50 workers.

That was the lowest since July, when 271 workers were handed pink slips in large company downsizings.

Those laid off joined the ranks of the unemployed, which has been increasing because of the state's economic downturn. The March mass layoff number was low compared to recent months, it did represent an increase over March 2008 mass layoff events, which numbered 5 and involved 304 people.
